The Virtues of Fur - And Why It Should Be Here To Stay

In this Spectrum television interview on Channel 1, David Appel shares his opinions on AB 44: a new law that would ban the sale of some new furs in California. Appel points out that faux fur is bad for the planet - it is a petroleum by-product, and it is not recyclable and not biodegradable. Real fur can be remade and remodeled and reused for 60-70 years after it was created. This means that real fur is sustainable, and real fur should be here to stay because it is much better for the environment. In the email below sent to his customers, David Appel explains more about the law:

Dear customers and friends,

I've found that there isn't a lot of clarity in regards to the fur law, AB-44, set to start January 1st, 2023.

So the question is... Is it legal to sell new fur in California?
The answer is YES and NO.
It will remain legal to sell the following new furs:

  • Russian Broadtail
  • American Broadtail
  • Shearling
  • Swakara Lamb
  • Goatskin
  • Tibetan Lamb and other lamb skins
  • All Cowhide/Leather products

It is legal to sell Vintage/Pre-owned furs
It is legal to wear furs.
It is legal to Remodel, Alter, Repair, Clean, and Store furs.
The fact is, this law will have minimal effect on my business and I will still be here to serve you.

In addition, there is currently a case being filed to reverse this law, and based on past rulings these restrictions will likely be short lived.

Thank you for your patronage.

Sincerely yours,
David Appel

The Importance of Cold Fur Storage

Storing your furs professionally with a furrier in a cold storage vault is paramount for preserving their quality and ensuring their longevity. Furs are delicate garments made from the pelts of animals, and their natural fibers require special care to maintain their luxurious appearance and texture over time. Here's why entrusting your furs to a professional furrier like David Appel Furs with cold storage facilities is crucial:

1. Preservation of Natural Oils: Furs contain natural oils that keep them soft, supple, and lustrous. However, exposure to heat and humidity can cause these oils to evaporate, leading to dryness, brittleness, and shedding. Cold storage maintains a stable environment with low humidity, preventing the loss of natural oils and preserving the softness and sheen of the fur.

2. Protection from Moths and Pests: Furs are susceptible to damage from moths, insects, and rodents that are attracted to natural fibers. Cold storage vaults are environments that are unfriendly and uncomfortable to pests and living creatures, providing a secure refuge for your valuable garments. Save your furs from moths without the unpleasant moth ball odor.

3. Prevention of Mold and Mildew: High humidity levels can promote the growth of mold and mildew, which can irreversibly damage fur garments. Cold storage vaults maintain a controlled climate with low humidity, inhibiting the conditions necessary for mold and mildew formation. Proper air circulation within the vault also helps prevent stagnant air pockets where moisture can accumulate.

4. Protection from Heat and Sunlight: Exposure to heat and sunlight can cause furs to fade, lose their color, and become brittle. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays damage furs, and so do certain types of lighting. Cold storage vaults provide a cool, dark environment that shields furs from these harmful elements, preserving their vibrant hues and ensuring that they remain soft and supple for years to come.

5. Professional Inspection and Maintenance: When you store your furs with a reputable furrier like David Appel Furs, they offer services such as inspection, cleaning, and conditioning before placing the garments in storage. This ensures that any dirt, dust, makeup, moisturizers/oils, perfumes or pollutants accumulated on the fur are removed, and the garment is in optimal condition for storage. Additionally, furriers may periodically inspect stored furs for signs of damage or deterioration, allowing them to address any issues promptly.

6. Security and Peace of Mind: Professional fur storage facilities not only provide a secure environment for your valuable garments but also offer peace of mind through stringent security measures. With controlled access and surveillance, these facilities ensure that your furs are protected from theft and unauthorized handling. By entrusting your furs to a reputable furrier like David Appel Furs, you can rest assured that your prized possessions are in safe hands.

Remember - storing your furs professionally with a furrier in a cold storage vault is essential for preserving their beauty, quality, and value. By entrusting your furs to experts who understand the intricacies of fur care and maintenance, you can enjoy your luxurious garments for generations to come.

FAQ

Questions & Answers

  • Is it safe to store my furs at home?

Storing furs at home poses risks due to exposure to heat, humidity, moths, and other pests. Professional cold storage facilities offered by furriers provide a safer environment, preserving the quality and longevity of your furs.

  • Are moths harmful to fur?

Yes, moths can be very harmful to fur as they are attracted to natural fibers and can cause damage by feeding on the fur, leaving behind holes and weakening the fabric. Especially in Southern California, where the evenings are warm, moths find comfort nestling in your fur garments, eating the fur, and laying eggs which leads to more rapid deterioration.

  • How do I insure my furs?

To insure your furs, add them as valuable items to your existing homeowners insurance policy. First, get an appraisal of your furs, (we appraise furs here at David Appel Furs), and then contact your insurance provider to add them to your policy as scheduled personal property. This way, if your furs are lost, stolen, or damaged due to covered perils like fire or theft, your furs are fully covered.

  • What if I don't have homeowners insurance?

We offer additional insurance coverage for a free, but it only covers your furs while they are on our premises.

  • How much does fur storage cost?

We charge $58 per garment per year (From May this year to May the following year).

  • How do I store my furs with David Appel Furs?
